Microsoft cuts 10,000 customer-service roles as AI handles routine support

Microsoft’s customer-service workforce has fallen from about 50,000 to 40,000 as AI tools take on routine requests, according to industry reporting.

Microsoft has reduced its customer-service workforce by about 10,000 roles, from roughly 50,000 contractors and employees to 40,000, as AI tools including Dynamics 365 handle more routine support work. Reporting cited estimated annual savings of about $750 million.

The change reflects a wider shift in customer service. Uber has cut about 10% of its customer-service operations jobs while routing more requests to chatbots, and Salesforce reportedly reduced support headcount from about 9,000 to 5,000 through its Agentforce system.

The results are not uniformly permanent. Gartner expects half of companies cutting customer-service headcount because of AI to rehire some workers by 2027, while other companies have reported reversals after service-quality problems.

For employers planning a similar restructure, the operational case should be separated from the legal process. In Australia, identify which duties have genuinely disappeared, consult affected employees before decisions are final, and actively assess suitable redeployment before ending employment. Keep evidence linking the proposed role change to the technology and review service-quality data before assuming every displaced position is redundant.

Key points
  • Microsoft’s customer-service workforce fell from about 50,000 to 40,000.
  • AI tools are handling routine support work and were linked to about $750 million in annual savings.
  • Other customer-service employers are also reducing human support roles, but some are rehiring after quality problems.
  • Australian employers must assess genuine redundancy, consult before deciding, and consider redeployment.

For employers: For an Australian AI restructure, document which work has disappeared, consult before finalising roles, and test suitable redeployment rather than treating AI adoption alone as proof of genuine redundancy.
